American football is a team sport in which the aim is to get the ball into the opponent's end zone and stop the opponent with tackles and blocks.

What is the aim of American football?

In American football, two teams of 11 players compete against each other on the field. The main objective is to score as many points as possible by getting the ball into the opponent's end zone. This is done either by running plays or precise passes. At the same time, the defensive team tries to prevent this from happening.


The basics and rules

American football is played in four quarters, each lasting 15 minutes. A play starts with the snap, where the ball is passed from the center to the quarterback. The attacking team has four attempts (downs) to advance the ball at least 10 yards. If they succeed, they get another four attempts. Otherwise, the right to attack changes.

Points can be scored in various ways:

  • Touchdown: The ball is carried into the opponent's end zone or caught there (6 points). After a touchdown, the team has the option of scoring either an extra point through a field goal (1 point) or a 2-point conversion (2 points).   • Field Goal: The ball is kicked through the field goal in the end zone (3 points).

  • Safety: The defense brings the ball carrier to the ground in his own end zone (2 points).

The player positions in American football

American football is played by two teams, each with up to 11 players on the field. Each team consists of offense, defense and special teams. Here are all the positions at a glance:

Offense (offensive team):

  • Quarterback (QB): Playmaker who either throws the ball, hands it off to running backs or runs it himself.

  • Running back (RB): Runs with the ball or catches short passes. Variants: Halfback (HB) and fullback (FB).

  • Wide receiver (WR): Catches passes and positions himself on the outside.

  • Tight end (TE): Combination of pass receiver and blocker, positioned next to the offensive line.

  • Offensive Linemen (OL): Consists of five players:

    • Center (C): Snaps the ball to the quarterback and blocks defenders.

    • Guard (G): Blocks defenders and protects the quarterback (two guards).

    • Tackle (T): Similar to the guards, but positioned further outside (two tackles).

Defense (defensive team):

  • Defensive linemen (DL): Try to reach the quarterback or stop running plays:

    • Defensive tackle (DT): Positioned in the middle to stop the run or put pressure on the quarterback.

    • Defensive End (DE): Positioned on the outside to pressure the quarterback or prevent running plays to the outside.

  • Linebacker (LB): Versatile players behind the defensive line:

    • Middle Linebacker (MLB): "Quarterback" of the defense, responsible for reading plays.

    • Outside Linebacker (OLB): Assists in pass defense or pressuring the quarterback (blitz).

  • Defensive backs (DB): Responsible for pass defense and final coverage:

    • Cornerback (CB): Covers wide receivers and prevents long passes.

    • Safety: Two types:

      • Strong Safety (SS): Supports against the run and covers short passes.

      • Free Safety (FS): Mainly responsible for long passes.

Special Teams:

  • Kicker (K): Performs kickoffs, field goals and extra points.

  • Punter (P): Kicks the ball far downfield on the fourth attempt.

  • Long Snapper (LS): Specializes in precise snaps on field goals and punts.

  • Holder (H): Holds the ball for the kicker on field goals and extra points.

  • Kick Returner (KR) and Punt Returner (PR): Catch and run with the ball after kickoffs or punts.

  • Gunner: Sprints on punts and kickoffs to tackle the returner.

  • Upback: Blocker on the punt team who also acts as a safety valve.


The field

An American football field is 100 yards long and 53 yards wide. The end zone is located at both ends. Markers indicate the distance to the end zone, and the field goal looms at the end of the end zone.
